Digital Health in 2016: artificial intelligence, healthbots and a $13B mHealth market

For the past five years eHealth entrepreneurs have stormed the healthcare market. With over 500 million smartphone users worldwide, we can safely say that Digital Health has gone mainstream.

In 2016 the big names in the Healthcare industry will be more willing to experiment with new technology solutions to replace their legacy offerings established decades ago. Those organizations without a transformer mindset will be left behind, also pushed back by the fast-paced Digital Healthcare Start-Up community.

 

A lot of disruptions are expected as we are looking forward to the next wave of mHealth apps, biotech, wearable devices and digital diagnostics. Nontraditional companies will also make their way into the juicy Healthcare industry. Brands within the professional sports, retail and other consumer industries will start offering more than just health and wellness.

 

What the future holds is even more implementations of artificial intelligence, healthcare gaming, virtual reality, 3D cameras, drones and robots. For example people are finally opening up to the idea that robots and AI can be used as a force of good in the healthcare industry – aiding in the care of elders. These so called “healthbots” will help not only the elderly, but also permanently injured, ill and disabled people.

 

But most of all, we are excited about the mobile healthcare applications as a total game-changer for the Healthcare industry. Currently there are over 165,000 mobile health apps and the Y2016 market size projections estimate for over $13B. The mHealth apps are fully leveraging the features of smartphones and tablets like location services, instant messaging, multimedia collaboration, gyroscope and sensors, and last but not least, micro payment services. From a technology point of view, developing native mobile apps is mandatory not only to ensure the required user experience, but also to provide the reliability for the next generation of mHealth apps which will address patients with chronic diseases. In order for mobile healthcare to become a main pillar in the patient care, we may see further steps towards the main concern - information security. One way to achieve this is to create a specific app store for the industry, where testing, releasing, maintaining and ads-related processes will be highly-secured (if ad networks are allowed at all).
