iOS 11 Release Date and New Features
13 Sep 2017
iOS 11 was unveiled by Apple earlier this year at WWDC 2017, showing some substantial improvements over its predecessor, iOS 10. At the event yesterday, the company revealed more details about the new version of the iPhone and iPad operating system.
During the Apple Event on 12. September the company has confirmed that iOS 11 will be available to download on September 19, just a few days before the official release of the new iPhone 8 on September 22 and iPhone X on November 3.
Here is a short summary of some of the best new features of iOS 11.
Apple announced ARKit as part of iOS 11 in June at WWDC 2017. This allows developers to offer high-end augmented reality (AR) capabilities in their apps without having to develop the AR system themselves and also improves existing AR solutions. Without a doubt it is an incomparable and cutting-edge platform for developing augmented reality applications.
New design of the App Store
Yet another big update of iOS 11 is the redesigned App Store to include a new Today tab, designed to help with app discovery, a new Games tab, dedicated to easily discover both new and popular games, as well as a new Apps tab for the rest of the content available on the App Store.
Control Center, Lock Screen, Notifications
Control Centre has been redesigned to now fit into one page – it is finally more customisable with access to more settings than ever before. Furthermore the Lock Screen and the Notifications have been combined, making things more convenient.
Apple Pay Peer-to-Peer Feature
The new Apple Pay peer-to-peer feature lets you pay contacts via iMessage and receive person-to-person payments quickly, easily, and securely. It uses the TouchID fingerprint sensor, and money received will go into your Apple Pay Cash Card, which can be used for further Apple Pay payments or for transfering money back into a bank account.
Siri has become more natural, now with both male and female voice and new visual interface. Apple also added new features to Siri including the ability to translate into German, French, Italian, Chinese or Spanish. She has also become more intelligent as it will now use on-device learning to discover more about you and thus improve suggestions when using particular applications like Mail and Messages.
Do Not Disturb While Driving feature and Indoor Maps
iOS 11 will bring the new Do Not Disturb While Driving feature automatically silence incoming alerts and notifications and send people trying to get in touch with you a note that you’ll be able able to check their message once you have arrived at your destination. Also maps of airports and shopping malls will be released soon, making life much easier.
New Camera Features and Live Photo Effects
Big improvements have been made also to the camera software. In addition to the improved image quality, there’s a Optical Image Stabilisation and True Tone flash. The camera will also come with a built-in QR scanner. A new technology - High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF), that reduces the file size of the photos has also been added by Apple. The last but not least thing to mention is the Depth API, which allows developers to use the iPhone’s camera to add more depth information to their app.
We are already looking forward to the release of the new version of iOS, are you?
